The U. S. Department of State has issued an announcement regarding Passport Fees. Effective March 8, 2005, an additional fee of $12.00 will be charged for every passport processed. The additional fee is called a "Passport Security Surcharge" and will reportedly fund multiple security enhancements in the U.S. passport. Also, the fee will support the cost of upgrading passport delivery from first class mail to priority mail with delivery confirmation.
The Town of Mount Desert is a passport acceptance agent but the fee we collect per passport will remain the same, $30.00. For information about passports and other travel issues, you may visit www.travel.state.gov
