Dog Ordinance
Annual Town Nesting     March 1965

Artic1e 51. Voted to adopt the following dog ordinance under authority of
N.R.S.  Title 30, Chapter 209.

1.      The owner or person charged with custody of a vicious dog, or a dog in heat, or a dog sick with or liable to communicate hydrophobia or other contagious disease, shall not permit such dog to run at large in the town.

2.      The owner or person charged with custody of a dog shall not permit) such dog to disturb the peace and quiet of any part of the town by whining, barking or yelping.

3.      The owner or person charged with custody of a dog shall not permit such dog to damage or destroy property of another person.

4.      Any person found guilty of violating any of the foregoing provisions of this dog ordinance shall be fined up to $50.00 for each offense.

DOG ORDINANCE AMENDMENT

Annual Town Meeting     March 1970

Article 60. Voted to adopt the following amendment to the dog ordinance adopted at the Town Meeting held on March 1, 1965.

3A.     No person shall cause or permit any dog owned or kept by him to run at large within the Town of Mount Desert.

Dogs while on any public way or place shall be under the restraint, within the meaning of this ordinance, if he is controlled by a leash, or at ‘heel’, beside a competent person and obedient to that person’s command or on or within a vehicle being driven or parked on the streets, or within the property limits of its owner or keeper. Nothing in this ordinance shall be held to require the leashing of any dog while on private premises. A leash shall not be more than S feet long.

3B.     The owner of any dog found running at large in violation of paragraph
3A of this ordinance shall be entitled to warnings on the first two violations. On the third and any subsequent violations the owner of any such dog shall be cited to appear in Court to answer charges of violation of this ordinance.

3C.     If any dangerous, fierce, or vicious dog cannot safely be taken up, such dog may be slain by any policeman or duly authorized animal control officer. In all cases where any dog, which has bitten a person or caused an abrasion of the skin of any person, is slain by any policeman whether by order of the court or otherwise, and a period of less than fifteen days has elapsed since the day on which such dog bit any person or caused an abrasion of the skin of any person, it shall be the duty of the policeman slaying such dog to forthwith deliver the carcass to the Chief of Police who shall cause the same to be examined by a veterinarian. £1LL114

DOG ORDINANCE AMENDMENT

Annual Town Meeting     March 1973

Article 55. Voted to adopt the following amendment to the dog ordinance adopted at the Town Meeting held on March 1, 1965 and amended at the Town Meeting held March 2, 1970:

3D.     No person shall cause or permit any dog owned or kept by him to be on the Seal Harbor Beach at any time between May 15 and October 15 of any year.
