Historic & Archaeological Resources Goal:
To identify and preserve the town’s important historic and archeological resources for future generations.
By understanding the forces that shaped the community’s development, residents are better able to connect their past. Historic structures contribute greatly to the town’s built environment, by adding to its aesthetic qualities, attracting the seasonal residents that are central to the town’s economy. Therefore it is important to protect the town’s historic and archaeological resources. They are a significant part of the town’s identity, and can provide tangible links with the community’s past.
Objectives:
1. Create municipal ordinances that are designed to protect our town’s archaeological, historic, and aesthetic resources.
Strategies:
a. Conduct a comprehensive inventory of local historic resources.
b. Consider the creation of historic districts or landmarks.
c. Adjust the land use ordinance to provide sufficient protection for important historic and archaeological resources.
d. Ensure that any adjustments to the land use ordinance and zoning ordinance are consistent with the historic character of our town’s villages.
e. Establish design guidelines that ensure new commercial development will complement the historic character of existing buildings in our town’s villages.
2. Use opportunities to leverage outside resources as a tool to improve the level of protection for Mount Desert’s historical and archaeological resources.
Strategies:
a. Explore the possibility of becoming a Certified Local Government through the National Park Service. This would give Mount Desert access to federal funding for historic preservation projects throughout the community.
b. Seek opportunities to use development or redevelopment as a tool to preserve historic sites and historic buildings.
c. Continue to work with local organizations that provide protection as well as educational opportunities for residents and visitors to learn more about our town’s history.
