Waste Oil Acceptance Policy

Schedule: The Town of Mount Desert will accept waste oil from property owners, or their agents, whose property is located within the bounds of the Town. Unless other arrangements are made, this material is to be delivered to the municipal highway garage located on Sargent Drive in Northeast Harbor during regular business hours. For the purpose of waste oil disposal, regular business hours are defined as being between the hours of 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Federal, State, and Local holidays are not considered regular business hours.
Sign-in Procedure: Upon arriving at the highway garage, any property owner, or their agent, wishing to dispose of waste oil is required to check-in with either of the two mechanics on duty. The property owner will be provided with a copy of the enclosed log sheet for their completion and signature. The log sheet state that, to the best of their knowledge, the material they wish to dispose of is clean waste oil, contaminated waste oil or, is from an unknown source. Materials will not be accepted if they obviously contain foreign materials including, but not limited to, solvents, gasoline or diesel fuel.
Disposition of Material: Clean waste oil logged in following the above procedure will be placed in one of the waste oil storage tanks by the mechanic(s). This material will subsequently be burned for heat recovery in the highway garage. Contaminated waste oil or materials from unknown sources that are logged in or arrive at the highway garage outside of normal business hours will be stored in 55-gallon drums placed in 92-gallon overpacked drums, the latter as secondary containment for the former. These drums will be kept in the Town-owned bus storage building adjacent to the highway garage. As these drums become filled, samples will be drawn and analyzed by a qualified laboratory. Depending upon the results of the analysis, the materials will either be burned as waste oil or disposed of in accordance with applicable Federal, State and, Local guidelines.
